I do believe it is Independence Day for my Northern living crew. I hope the day was filled with family and friends.

I also happens to be the 24th anniversary of this fleet forming. Yes we've been around THAT long, there are a handful of us who have been around since those early days.

The journey through the wormhole was swift and uneventful for the most part. Captain Kaylen returned to her command chair, legs crossed comfortably before her, the crew working like a well oiled machine. The ship itself through the odd niggle here and there- not completely unexpected after an extended and extensive repair.

The wormhole exit blossomed before them, widening to reveal the starscape of the Gamma quadrant. Still largely uncharted, Starfleet was slowly starting to reassert itself in this place after the war.

It would take a day for them to reach the nebula that Command wanted them to study…

She had rerouted power through failing conduits, argued with computers that were functioning perfectly while actively attempting to kill their operators, and once had spent six consecutive hours convincing a transporter that a missing molecular pattern was more important than its own diagnostic. Yet somehow, standing outside a turbolift with a growling stomach and a doctor's orders to rest, she found herself confronted by a problem of equal importance. "Do I eat first or get some sleep?"

They had found Zio, longtime friend of Rhenora, Remal, Patin and Kira. She was a trusted friend who lived high in the mountains. Having returned to her roots, the amputee lived entirely off the land, killed her own game, grew her own food, educated her children to look after themselves in a galaxy that was constantly changing. Bajor was no exception, the Prophets were being challenged by the Wraith and the Brotherhood, the Federation kept the whole thing at arms length, not wanting to get involved. Typical.

Several weeks have passed since I reported aboard the USS Sunfire. The distinction between days has already begun to erode, replaced by duty rotations, alert tones, and the constant vibration of the engines through the deckplates. This is a familiar phenomenon. Assuming the role of Chief Medical Officer has proceeded with fewer complications than anticipated. That does not imply the absence of scrutiny. At 1427 hours, Deep Space Nine signaled priority contact. Colonel Kira Nerys appeared on main viewer. Her report was short and to the point: the replacement control satellite had passed all station-level diagnostics and was ready for handover. Requested Sunfire to retrieve, position, and complete final activation protocols. Authorization codes transmitted and verified.

The transfer to the USS Sunfire is still pending. The ship hasn't arrived at Deep Space 9 yet, and so I am left to wait. I've been spending my time in my quarters, staring out the window at the endless parade of vessels docked at the station's ring.
