Shuttles
"Bridge," Jenna relayed information. "Beta Captain's shuttle has entered a steep decent into the upper strata of the storm cell. I am attempting to reach them in time for either a lift maneuver or quick extraction. Be advised, it sounds as if Baldric is injured. Have a medical team on standby." And then she closed the channel so that she could focus on catching up with Baldric's falling shuttle which was already entering the thick cloud layer and sensors were starting to scatter from the storm. Right now the only thing worse would be for lightning to strike either ship.
Bridge
Savar turned in the helm seat to look back at Rhenora. "Do you wish me to move the Sunfire into a better position if we are required to assist in recovering the shuttles?"
Dean actually still had the shield with him as he stepped onto the Bridge. "Change the polar orbits. Go towards the southern, Mr. Savar. That way if we have to swing around it will put us in line with where they should be expected to come from. Launch a probe as well for a lightning rod."
"Launch the probe, keep it just below the cloud layer to attract the lightning' Rhenora nodded to Dean. "Helm, change alignment to a polar orbit. Transporter room, i know the storms are gonna play havoc, but we need a lock on Baldric and her team from a free-falling shuttle," she rattled off orders before realising that her next one was going to suck.
"Sickbay, prepare for incoming casualties." She knew they were currently trying to save Sarah, pulling one of them off the task could be deadly.
Shuttle
Meanwhile, in the second Shuttle, Michael took over the controls, trying to keep it from free-falling out of control as the turbulence started to get worse. He said," Brace for impact," as the Shuttle shook and the team braced themselves for landing.
Bridge
Savar's fingers danced across the console as the Sunfire gracefully changed its position. " Moving into southern polar orbit." The Sunfire jerked slightly at his next statement. "Probe launched. "It is below the cloud layer and holding its position." He replied.
Sickbay
In Sickbay Aurora was still holding onto Sarah’s hand as though willing her to pull through by sheer touch alone. “Is there any sign of improvement?”
Tarsis looked behind him at the monitor and nodded imperceptibly. "She is no longer declining. Which is a lot better than where we were 10 minutes ago" he admitted before looking towards the new CMO. "You saved her life"
“Congratulations to both of you” Aurora smiled as she finally let go of Sarah’s hand to let her friend rest. “I can definitely feel a difference, it’s slight but it’s there.”
"That's a relief, for a while there is though we were going to lose her." Tarsis sagged a little with relief then looked at Lt Zh’Vareth "your treatment worked, I assume you'll continue until she makes a full recovery?" There was a bone tiredness in his voice.
Thalek gave a slight nod, stepping forward to double-check the readings himself. The numbers held steady—no decline, no new complications. For now, that would have to be enough.
“Yes, of course,” he replied, voice low but steady. “I’ll maintain the current course of treatment and monitor for any rebound response. If her markers continue to stabilize, we can begin tapering support therapies by the end of the next cycle.”
He allowed himself a small exhale—not quite a sigh, but close—as he saved the scan to her file and began preparing the next set of diagnostics.
“She’s not out of danger yet,” he added, antennae dipping slightly toward the patient, “but she’s fighting. I’ll make sure she has every advantage we can give her.”
He glanced briefly at Aurora, registering the quiet determination still written across her features. “Thank you for staying with her. That kind of connection… it matters.”
"Sickbay, prepare for incoming casualties."
Thalek tapped his combadge. “Acknowledged. Sickbay preparing to receive.”
Shuttle Alpha
Following the shuttle's location on the sensors, Jenna's own pierced the ceiling underlayer of clouds. She was now fully engulfed in the rain and spore soup, but she could see the shuttle with her genetically enhanced eyes. It's decent angle had changed, and she realized she would not be able to reach it before impact. But, she now had a proximity and the chance to get a transporter lock.
She quickly tapped in the coordinates for the shuttle and a destination, the Sunfire Med Bay, and pushed transport a split second before the shuttle struck the ground and burst into a ball of matter-antimatter fire. "Sunfire, do you have them? Sunfire, is the transport complete?" She asked, almost in a panic, just before a bolt of lightning struck the port side, shorting out her communications and navigation systems.
"I'm out of control and flying blind as a bat." She commented to herself as she tried to regain control of the runabout. Today was not her day to die, she said internally as she gritted her teeth and repowered her systems.
Shuttle Beta
As the Shuttle began to spiral out of control, Michael knew that this was bad, and with the Commander out cold, he had to take responsibility for the team. Just then, he began to feel the tingle of a Transporter beam and knew that things had changed for the better as he watched the commander vanish.
Bridge
Rhenora looked towards the Ops station and the junior officers nodded in affirmation, "Confirming, two beamed to sickbay" he said shortly.
Rhenora almost dared to breathe, but not quite. "Jenna, can you establish control, or do you need a beam out?" She thumbed the external comm system to the lead shuttle.
Probe and Photon Torpedo control and monitor station
Kit slapped the communication button on the console =^=Bridge we just had the modified torpedo launched by the bridge. The bird was not, not fully ready for launch. We have an uncontrolled M.O.A.B. on the loose that will be delivering an uncontrolled 46 gigajoules of pure energy in..." here she looked at the control panel, then the technician "...five minutes. ALL AIRCRAFT WITHIN A KLICK NEED TO CLEAR THE AREA NOW. Bridge, this is a Level one event. Unable to control the torpedo or deactivate the timer.=^=
Kit sat back and looked at the technician, they both knew the next three minutes would be pure hell, and all they could do was watch the clock. By the thousand Gods, protect those poor souls in the atmosphere and grant them God's Speed to clear the area. she thought. I may have well killed them with my plan.
Bridge
Back on the bridge, Rhenora swore under her breath, the only visible sign of the instant knot in her gut. " Received Kit, sending out an emergency warning to all shuttles in the area". So much for getting out of this alive.
"Commander Savar, move us to a safe distance," she ordered her XO, who was still at the helm.
"Aye Captain." Savar replied not turning to look at Rhenora, His long fingers danced across the console and the Sunfire responded to his touch as the great ship slowly moved to a safer distance.
Shuttle Alpha
Of course, Jenna couldn't hear the call from the Sunfire Bridge. All she knew is they were up there, somewhere. All she had were her own wits and a ship she desperately needed to get above the storm clouds. On the port side, a small plasma fire and a trail of billowing smoke. It did not matter; only elevation mattered now.
She pushed the ship hard, and the storm outside pushed back. Between wind gusts and electrostatic discharges, she turned and maneuvered the ship upwards until finally it broke through the upper cloud layer into the sunlight once more.
Then the computer announced, "Device explosion imminent."
Perplexed, Jenna was about to question the computer when the clouds parted in front of her, and a shockwave rolled over the runabout. She had a split second to choose: transport out without coordinates, or raise the shields and hope to ride it out. She pressed the button, just as a second, more powerful wave rolled through the ship, and then all she could see was fire.
"Son of a..." She had gone right from the frying pan, into the fryer.
Control Tower
"Bridge, this is Shuttle control," Bonnie said through the comms. "All shuttle squadrons have returned safely except Beta Captain. And now it appears... I just lost Commander Ramthorne's signature."
Rhenora sucked in a other breath, releasing it slowly to focus herself. "I have reports of two from shuttle Beta were beamed to sickbay, what do you mean you've lost Commander Ramthorne's signature?" She looked at the junior officers at Ops, who looked like a deer in the headlights.
"Uhhh tracking last known location... uhhh it was close to the bomb.... Captain... ma'am sir." He stammered.
Rhenora swore in a string of ancient Bajoran phrases few would recognize. "Scan for the shuttle, use everything we have to find her."
Probe and Photon Torpedo control and monitor station
Kit watched as the timer slowly worked its way down to zero. She had tried everything she knew to disable the device, to no avail. It was about to release its payload of explosive fury.
