I do believe it is Independence Day for my Northern living crew. I hope the day was filled with family and friends.

I also happens to be the 24th anniversary of this fleet forming. Yes we've been around THAT long, there are a handful of us who have been around since those early days.

Jenna stirred, the pain arriving before awareness, spreading through her ribs with every breath and pulsing sharply behind her right eye. Her fingers twitched against the helm. The familiar shape beneath them gave her the first piece of certainty she could find. She was still on the bridge.

"No, we're not too late" Marie murmured as they advanced towards the wrecked hull of the Sunfire. "The bridge is mostly intact and the forcefields are holding" she commented as it came into view. "Geeez, they're a mess though, heavy casualties. Looks like they took the bad guys with them though."

Bonnie disappeared into Main Engineering with the determined stride of someone arriving at the scene of a crime. The cheerful glow that had carried her through the morning briefing had long since evaporated, replaced by the quiet focus that usually preceded very long days and very uncomfortable discoveries.

She slid into the master systems console and rested both hands on the LCARS interface. "Computer, display all subsystem command pathways modified within the last fourteen days."

Rosa released the harness. For several seconds she remained where she was, seated in the sideways cockpit with one hand braced against the console and the other hanging uselessly at her side. Her body had not yet accepted that the movement had stopped. Somewhere beyond the fractured hull, something continued to groan beneath the strain, a long metallic complaint that rose and fell through the ruined shuttle bay. The weapons pod was gone. For a fraction of a second, the space where it had been seemed almost peaceful. Then the pod became a small star. Several weeks have passed since I reported aboard the USS Sunfire. The distinction between days has already begun to erode, replaced by duty rotations, alert tones, and the constant vibration of the engines through the deckplates. This is a familiar phenomenon. I have experienced it before. The recurrence is… notable.

Assuming the role of Chief Medical Officer has proceeded with fewer complications than anticipated. That does not imply the absence of scrutiny. At 1427 hours, Deep Space Nine signaled priority contact. Colonel Kira Nerys appeared on main viewer. Her report was short and to the point: the replacement control satellite had passed all station-level diagnostics and was ready for handover. Requested Sunfire to retrieve, position, and complete final activation protocols. Authorization codes transmitted and verified.

The transfer to the USS Sunfire is still pending. The ship hasn't arrived at Deep Space 9 yet, and so I am left to wait. I've been spending my time in my quarters, staring out the window at the endless parade of vessels docked at the station's ring.
