I do believe it is Independence Day for my Northern living crew. I hope the day was filled with family and friends.

I also happens to be the 24th anniversary of this fleet forming. Yes we've been around THAT long, there are a handful of us who have been around since those early days.

The cheerful glow that had carried her through the morning briefing had long since evaporated, replaced by the quiet focus that usually preceded very long days and very uncomfortable discoveries.

Rosa released the harness. For several seconds she remained where she was, seated in the sideways cockpit with one hand braced against the console and the other hanging uselessly at her side. Her body had not yet accepted that the movement had stopped. Somewhere beyond the fractured hull, something continued to groan beneath the strain, a long metallic complaint that rose and fell through the ruined shuttle bay. Smoke drifted past the cockpit windows in slow, uncertain ribbons. Emergency lighting flickered through the haze, painting the wreckage in alternating pulses of red and darkness.

The weapons pod was gone. For a fraction of a second, the space where it had been seemed almost peaceful. Then the pod became a small star. There was no beginning to the explosion that the eye could follow. One instant it was a piece of the Sunfire, torn loose and tumbling away. The next, the darkness behind the ship was filled with white light.

USS Sunfire - Bridge

Jenna's hands still gripped the helm controls, fingers locked around them with the stubborn strength of instinct, as though some part of her had continued flying after the rest of her world had gone dark. Her head rested against the edge of the console, a line of blood tracing from her right temple and disappearing into her hair. Each breath came shallowly beneath the pressure of bruised ribs, her body curled slightly around the pain even while the emergency systems struggled to restore enough gravity to keep her anchored.

Several weeks have passed since I reported aboard the USS Sunfire. The distinction between days has already begun to erode, replaced by duty rotations, alert tones, and the constant vibration of the engines through the deckplates. This is a familiar phenomenon. I have experienced it before. The recurrence is… notable.

Assuming the role of Chief Medical Officer has proceeded with fewer complications than anticipated. That does not imply the absence of scrutiny. Orbital track remains stable over Bajor’s northern hemisphere. Power levels nominal, comm buoy array holding lock. Current duty shift cycling cleanly.

At 1427 hours, Deep Space Nine signaled priority contact. Colonel Kira Nerys appeared on main viewer. Her report was short and to the point: the replacement control satellite had passed all station-level diagnostics and was ready for handover. Requested Sunfire to retrieve, position, and complete final activation protocols. Authorization codes transmitted and verified.

Acknowledged the order and initiated retrieval preparations.

The transfer to the USS Sunfire is still pending. The ship hasn't arrived at Deep Space 9 yet, and so I am left to wait. I've been spending my time in my quarters, staring out the window at the endless parade of vessels docked at the station's ring.
