I do believe it is Independence Day for my Northern living crew. I hope the day was filled with family and friends.

I also happens to be the 24th anniversary of this fleet forming. Yes we've been around THAT long, there are a handful of us who have been around since those early days.

The first round of tests gave Rosa exactly what she expected and absolutely nothing she wanted. A proper stress test carried a certain amount of disappointment when the machine survived every challenge without complaint. Pilots enjoyed success. Test pilots enjoyed data. The two concepts shared territory, though they rarely occupied the same seat.

The Firebird accelerated cleanly through a series of impulse bursts that would have left most shuttlecraft grumbling through their structural members. Rosa drove her through increasingly aggressive flight profiles, building speed before snapping into hard vector changes that attempted to expose weaknesses hidden inside the frame. Telemetry…

The fabrication bay had settled into the comfortable rhythm that followed a successful test flight.

Technicians moved between consoles with the relaxed efficiency of people whose reports had already come back clean. Diagnostic displays scrolled green across suspended monitors. Structural scans rotated lazily above workstations. Somewhere beneath the layered hum of power systems and environmental controls, somebody had started playing music through a maintenance speaker and earned exactly three complaints before everyone decided they liked the selection after all.

Patina continued to wage war on the splash pool, sending floating toys and water in every conceivable direction. She returned to the edge regularly for fruit and sips of the berry smoothie that Remal had ordered for her, before returning anew to the war on water.

Several weeks have passed since I reported aboard the USS Sunfire. The distinction between days has already begun to erode, replaced by duty rotations, alert tones, and the constant vibration of the engines through the deckplates. This is a familiar phenomenon. At 1427 hours, Deep Space Nine signaled priority contact. Colonel Kira Nerys appeared on main viewer. Her report was short and to the point: the replacement control satellite had passed all station-level diagnostics and was ready for handover. The transfer to the USS Sunfire is still pending. The ship hasn't arrived at Deep Space 9 yet, and so I am left to wait. I've been spending my time in my quarters, staring out the window at the endless parade of vessels docked at the station's ring.
