I do believe it is Independence Day for my Northern living crew. I hope the day was filled with family and friends.

I also happens to be the 24th anniversary of this fleet forming. Yes we've been around THAT long, there are a handful of us who have been around since those early days.

Captain Kaylen Rhenora lingered in sickbay after Marie had passed, sittin quietly in the solomn environment. Everything and everyone seemed subdued, even the equipment seemed to function quieter. She took her time, murmouring the prayers most Bajorans uttered after the passing of a loved one. The observation lounge was quieter than the rest of the ship. Elara had chosen it deliberately for that reason. Less noise. Fewer interruptions. A place where conversations didn't have to compete. She was halfway through a data review when someone stepped up beside the table.

The word was spread the old fashioned way - word of mouth. Scuttlebutt was that there was a club opening tonight - JG's and below. Inside the doors of Holodeck 5 deep down on deck 13, where the thrum of the Sunfire could be felt, was something meticulously curated. Thumbing the access panel would reveal the outside of a dark, wood paneled building and a black painted set of wooden doors, above which a flickering neon pink sign in exaggerated looping script.

Captain Captain Rhenora was subdued, as she often was when someone close had passed. The Sunfire had increase speed to warp 6 and was heading back to Earth to return Batel's body to her home. Several weeks have passed since I reported aboard the USS Sunfire. The distinction between days has already begun to erode, replaced by duty rotations, alert tones, and the constant vibration of the engines through the deckplates. This is a familiar phenomenon. At 1427 hours, Deep Space Nine signaled priority contact. Colonel Kira Nerys appeared on main viewer. Her report was short and to the point: the replacement control satellite had passed all station-level diagnostics and was ready for handover. Requested Sunfire to retrieve, position, and complete final activation protocols. Authorization codes transmitted and verified.

The transfer to the USS Sunfire is still pending. The ship hasn't arrived at Deep Space 9 yet, and so I am left to wait. I've been spending my time in my quarters, staring out the window at the endless parade of vessels docked at the station's ring.
