Mission: Masimal
Location: USS Sunfire
Timeline: Current

Responding to Commander Savar, "The computer doesn't seem to be able to determine the nature of the organic material at this distance. But," She looked at the scanner results, "While the fog is patchy, there does seem to be some areas that are less dense. We should be able to find an open landing zone close to the city outskirts, here." She brought the location up on the main viewer for the bridge crew to see.

Dean glanced up from his console a moment and what he was scanning. Tilting his head ever so slightly. "Given that we know they aren't pre-warp, why don't we just plop down in the city? It's not like it's going to hurt anything."

Savar nodded in silent acknowledgement at what the computer analysis was. More detailed analytics were going to be required to determine just they were dealing with.

Jenna wanted to reply to Dean, instead, internally noting he wasn't a pilot and choosing a more tactful response. She gestured at the image, "There doesn't appear to be a visible landing zone or a visible city, just dense fog. Why risk it?"

"There is also a risk that landing would possibly infect our crew with whatever illness is going on here. We'll get what we can from the sensors a DNA possibly send a EV suited crew down in the future. Risk Minimisation at this point." Rhenora smiled at Dean, it had been a decent enough idea to broach, but wasn't her strategy at the moment.

Dean glanced at Jenna for a moment, "Pick up your visual scanning and the infrared. There's at least five perfectly good landing zones, as well as two in the city square." Double checking, in case and yes, what he said came up.

Glancing to Rhenora, "EVA suits keep that from happening, unless compromised. The transporter and shuttle transporter buffers will filter out....almost any contagions. I still recommend my course of action."

*Ahem* Savar coughed from his station. "The logical step is to let the sensor scans complete their analysis where we can look at the data collected and then decide on the next appropriate step to take." He finished as he looked to Rhenora.

Infrared was limited, she knew that, he knew that, she knew that he knew that. And yet they were still having the discussion which felt more like a 'I know more than you' type of petty. Jenna had not been onboard very long, and she was still getting to know people. Her first impression of Dean was that he relished knowing everything first, a proverbial jack-of-all-trades, master of... ? Well, that remained to be seen.

Rhenora kept her composure and looked at the data coming through the sensors. Detailed analysis would take time but high level data interpretation showed the air was breathable, the water was drinkable, and the class M atmosphere was still stable. Where or what was causing this virus though was still concerning. "What have you found on the infra-red?" She asked Dean.

Dean paused and waited a moment so he could confirm what he was seeing. "You really don't want to know. Though since I'm going to have to tell you anyway....It's coming from the plant life I think. Certain ones are blaring red, hot."

"So there's something in the flora at least" The Captain mused as she flicked the infrared detail up onto the main screen. Both that and the Humanoid life were showing very 'hot' as Dean has mentioned.

"Can we see if the population is congregating, and if rhe numbers match the last recorded numbers?" Baldric asked from the rear of the bridge.

Looking at the main view screen and seeing the 'hot' plant life, Savar offered one word. "Fascinating."

Thr sensors panned over the planet's surface gathering as much data as they could. From what Baldric could see the population wasn't congregating, however it seemed they were fighting one another. Odd when this planet had had peace for hundreds of years. It also married in with the message they had received.

"Can the biosensors pick up high pathogenic or viral load through lifespans?" She asked curiously.

Jenna waited for someone else who had a better knowledge of what the sensors could read before she added her useless two cents.

Dean glanced up for a moment, "They can if calibrated right. Science or Medical ones, yes."

"Make whatever adjustments you need to, we need that kind of data" Baldric replied, tweaking her own workstation to better interpret the results. "I'll send it through to medical as it comes through. Dr Wilson and Aurora are already reviewing the message for further medical data."

The doors parted and Bonnie stepped onto the bridge. Without realizing others were conversing, she spoke up, "Sorry if I was late, been feeling... off. Anyway, how can I help?" She asked, addressing the entirety of the bridge.

"Can you rig the biosensors to detect viral or pathogenic load of the general population?" Baldric asked, nodding towards the science station. She knew Dean was working on it already but could probably use a hand making the finer adjustments.

"Um, yeah, I think I can do that," Bonnie replied as she sat down at her station and set to work. She noticed some improvements had already been made so she set to work fine-tuning the adjustments and using filters to clear a way through the ground clutter, or fog. After a few minutes of silence, she announced, "That's about as good as it gets."

A few minutes later, the viewscreen changed to show the new data coming from the biosensors. The population were shown in shades of blue and red. Blue meant no viral load, red meant pathogens and viruses were detected.

"Zoom in on the southern continent, and set to maximum sensitivity," Rhenora ordered, picking out a region that seemed to have an equal number of red and blue dots. Slowly, the blue turned to red before their eyes.

"The disease, whatever it is, is rapidly infecting the healthy plant life, which is infecting the population as it is consumed," Savar observed,

"There also seems to be some kind of person to person transmission" Rhenora mused as the colours slowly changed colour before their eyes. "Whatever is going on down there is virulent. If we send people down there it will be full envirosuits."

"Agreed Captain, the person-to-person transmission may be occurring because of an individual ingesting a plant contaminated with the virus and then having close contact with another person. That is a most prudent and logical course of action." Savar said in his usual Vulcan calm.

"We need more information" Rhenora said sagely, rising from her command chair. "Commander Savar, take Dr Wilson and Commander Ramthorne in a shuttle with full environmental protection. Start with a low level recon, then we'll see what more we can find"

Rising from his XO chair, Savar nodded crisply. "At once Captain. Commander Ramthorne with me please." He then tapped his combadge, "Dr. Wilson, please meet Commander Ramthorne and myself in the shuttle bay."

Bonnie sighed to herself, glad that she was not put on the spot as a member of the away team. Unfortunately for her, the sigh was audible enough for Dean and Jenna to hear. Jenna, having already stood to join the team, stopped in her tracks and asked, "Mind if we take Ms. Durnell along, in case we need some more of those fancy sensor adjustments?" The question was aimed at Savar, but left open for Rhenora's sake.

"Please do" Rhenora agreed, and then nodded towards Bonnie and tried to give her a reassuring smile. "Full biohazard protocols to be observed, and no landing without authorization. Oh, and take Commander Baldric, she may be able to analyze the data in real time."

Bonnie looked from Rhenora to Jenna and back again in horror before resigning herself to the party. She logged out of her console and stood, waiting for the leaders to exit the bridge. Feeling like the bad luck charm she was, she could already picture this recon missing going so bad so fast.

Dean shook his head a little bit, knowing Bonnie didn't want to go. They all have jobs to do, though. Giving her a reassuring smile. In the same beat, looking to Jennifer. "Be safe; All of you," obviously a little different meaning towards Jennifer.

Jenna watched Bonnie with amusement before shooting Baldric a raised eyebrow, suggesting, 'you comin' without saying a word. She then stepped onto the turbolift and ordered it to the "Shuttle Bay."

Baldric followed a moment later, being the last to arrive in the shuttle bay. She took a moment to stow the correctly sized environmental suit and enabled full biohazard protocols. Masimal was a warp-capable planet, and its matter transport system was similar to the Federation's.

The shuttle lifted off, rotating slightly to face the shuttle bay doors, which had retracted to release the shuttle. The shields would need to drop momentarily to allow the shuttle to pass. At that time, both the shuttle and the Sunfire would be vulnerable.

Dean turns back around to monitor the shuttle, dropping the shields so that the shuttle can get out. There didn't seem to be any immediate threat, so a rush to get them back up wasn't really foremost on Dean's mind.

Michael Stevens entered the bridge, taking his station at Security, and wondered what the other senior staff were on about. He had been dealing with staff rostering and shuffling the section heads. He asked," What's up?"

"It appears that Masimal has some sort of pathogenic or viral crisis going on." The Captain replied calmly. "We're sending a shuttle to do a recon run."

Jenna maneuvered the shuttle into open space, aimed it at the layered atmosphere and proceeded forward, on through the turbulent layers, one after another, after another.

This was recon, quick and simple. Nothing could possibly go wrong. Bonnie thought to herself as she monitored the sensors, occasionally looking out the window at their progress.

Baldric was glued to the sensor data as it scrolled across the screen, her attention utterly invested in this problem.

Meanwhile back on the Sunfire, the ship's lighting dropped to red. "Unauthorised inbound transport, deck 4 section 31"
