Mission:
Planet of the Dinosaurs
Location: Sunfire
Timeline: Day 2 - Morning
The sun rose early that morning, casting an orange glow through the viewport at around 5am in the morning. The sky was blue and clear, promising a warm day - perfect for collecting solar energy.
Ronson had taken the last watch and had been awake for two hours when dawn broke, he took a few moments to appreciate the sunrise, having not been planetside for sometime to appreciate a sunrise. Sometimes it was the little things that kept one going in tough times - the sunrise, good company and a common goal.
Tom woke a few minutes later, his eyes snapping open and he was instantly awake. The years spent on the jungle planet, served him well here. He saw Ronson admiring the sunrise. "A beautiful sight to be sure eh Ronson?" He asked as he took in the glorious sunrise as well.
"Tis indeed, I can count on one hand the number of sunrises I've seen since enlisting in Starfleet" Ronson mused as he took in the slowly but ever changing colours. Pulling out a tricorder he checked the power readings and was delighted to see they had increased since deploying the sail, despite the late hour. "The sail is working, batteries at 15 percent and rising."
"Doesn't matter how many sunrises you've seen, they are always spectacular." He nodded at Ronson giving him the news on the batteries. "15 percent? That's great. If we can get the second sail deployed, we should a major jump in energy going into the batteries." Tom replied. "Good work Ronson."
"Team effort Sir. We should get the rest of these guys up so we can get working on that second sail and extinguishing the last of the fires. It's gonna take some time to vent all that smoke" Ronson replied as he stood and stretched, releasing the tension in his spine. "What I wouldn't give for a sneaky cup of the Captain's coffee right about now"
Tom nodded. "You are right Ronson. But as you said it was a team effort and this will be as well. We'll get the sail deployed, Let Bonnie and Kit handle the smoke still inside the ship and Thriss can monitor everyone's progress. "You know if you can get the captain's coffee machine repaired. You can have a cup of her coffee. we'll have more than enough power stored in the batteries for the coffee machine." He smiled, "And I won't tell."
Bonnie lay on an unfamiliar bed, mouth open, eyes still closed. She had gone to bed late, worked the third watch, then went back to bed. And now, something that had never been seen from this particular bedroom on this particular ship before, the sunrise. It was unnatural and wrong and all it made her want to do was roll over and shove her head beneath the pillow.
Instead, she knew she had a job to do. Instead, she rolled face down into her pillow, let her frustration out in one deep, long scream, then rolled back again. She forced her eyes open with a struggled flutter and then pulled each of her legs up into a stretch one after another. After all of that, Bonnie spun around to the edge of the bed, sat up, stretched her arms, and stood up, or at least attempted to. The floor beneath her was still at a 20-degree tilt and cluttered, so her feet landed wrong, as she stood she lost balance and immediately fell forward on her face.
"Owe." She proclaimed lightly as she attempted to stand again, rubbing the newly forming bump on her forehead. Half an hour later she emerged into the common area, dressed, refreshed, eyes half open to find Ronson, Thomas, Thriss and Kit already waiting for her. There was food, and drink sitting ready on a table when she walked up. "Morning all." She mumbled as she sat down and curled her legs up to her chest once more.
"Good morning, Bonnie." Tom replied pleasantly as she sat down. "Are you alright?" He inquired an underlying hint of concern in his voice as he pointed to his forehead in seeing the bump she had on her own.
Bonnie touched her own head, just another bump or bruise, "This?" She gave a half-hearted smile, "This is just me waking up on a... " She paused and addressed the ships computer. "Computer, what day is it?" To which there was no response, not one chirp or beep. In resignation she finished her statement, "Well, whatever day this is. It's nothing to worry about though, thanks for asking." She went back to her daydreaming.
" I wish we could level her up, the Sunfire I mean. Working on a lean all day sucks" Ronson grumbled into his water canister, trying to convince his mind it was something stronger. " Kit - what's for breakfast?"
"I agree Ronson, but we'd need a lot more power than we have now." Tom observed. "Maybe when we get another sail deployed and the smoke vented completely and the fires out we can see if we can make improve the situation."
Kit was humming as she was busily cooking their breakfast "I believe, if what my mother and sister tell me is true, it is called an 'Apple Fritter', It is something my sister picked up while studying on Earth. I found some apples in the Officers mess along with some other perishables. Thought a little sweetness would help everyone's mood." She looked at everyone and then stated, "Lunch should be emergency rations, and I will make another Earth recipe this evening known as 'Hobo Tatters', a conglomerate of scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes and cheese."
After they finished their meal Ronson sat back against his chair and rubbed his belly, satiated and ready for another day's hard work "Alright Sirs, lets get this second sail set up"
Tom stood and stretched. He slapped Ronson on the back. "let's get to it shall we Ronson? With the second sail deployed I am anxious to see what that does to the energy intake we're able to store."
Kit nodded at the suggestion they get to work, "Just to inform you I have placed several insect traps about the hull during my watch. Please do not disturb them. They should be out of the way. I need to get a sample of the local insects as they will be a major vector of disease transmission to the crew. Also be aware I have seen this planets version of a Velociraptor; they have dark to fading green feathers and long stinger like tails. They appear to travel in hunting groups. I also saw a snake like creature that appears to be like an Earth mythological creature known as a 'Hydra'. There are five like 'false heads' it uses these heads to snag its prey then opens a central maw and eats its prey whole. They are dark brown to black in color. Needless to say, I am sure there are far more dangerous creatures that may be encountered."
And just like that Bonnie was glad she chose to stay on the repair team, inside the Sunfire, where it was safe. She stood and grabbed supplies for the day, mainly more water than they had the day prior. She had a feeling they may need it. "You about ready?" She asked Kit. "I wanna see about getting a few more decks vented before we try the fire suppression systems." There was still smoke billowing out from the chimney they had created, likely able to be seen by the crew who were 7 kilometers away. This meant there was still a fire source burning more than 24 hours since they had crashed.
Kit smiled and replied "As ready as can be. We will suit up on Deck Nine and proceed down. Now we are entering the really dangerous sections. I was just glad there were no fires present on Deck Nine, if a fire was to hit the Torpedo Storage lockers and areas, we would be toast. I still am worried about Deck Thirteen, we need to work fast to get there, if any fire hits the Deuterium storage or injector assemblies, well let's just say it would make the Torpedo Storage lockers look like a firecracker. Remember to stay connected to me and stay close."
Tom chuckled. "Hell of a motivational speech Kit." He looked to the others. "Remember no one goes anywhere alone and at least one of the pair carry a phaser. Don't want anyone on some dinos breakfast menu." He looked over to Ronson, "Let's go Ronson and get the second sail deployed."
" Yes Sir" Ronson replied as he pushed his chair away and sorted the dishes.
Thriss had been relatively quiet up until now. He turned his attention towards his colleagues. "I'll monitor your statuses and surroundings if possible from the bridge while trying to get engineering functions back online from the bridge."
"Thanks Thriss, it'll give us a good idea as to how the sails are working and if we need to tweak the angle" Ronson replied as the group started to disperse.
