Avarak sat behind his desk going over the multitude of reports that awaited his return. The minute he entered his office that morning it had become abundantly clear to him that it would take some time to catch up on everything that he had missed while he was gone. He had just picked up another PADD before he heard his doorbell chime.
"Enter." He said perfunctorily, heavily distracted by his work at hand.
Ensign Kitiuas Thenis stepped through the doorway and stepped toward the desk three paces away she came to a position of attention, saluted and stated "Ensign Kitiuas Thenis reporting for duty." She remained at the position of attention and took in the surroundings of the office with her eyes. Before her sat a Vulcan male who had several PADD's on a desk in front of him. She was not in the least intimidated by the presence or demeanor of the Vulcan in front of her, after all she had been through a rigorous education program administered by a Vulcan, Lieutenant Commander Valeris, her Pyllora, or mentor. She suspected that her department head, Lieutenant j.g. Avarak had just returned back to the USS Sunfire himself. She mused he must have been on leave, as she awaited his response to her reporting in for duty.
"Good day, Ensign, please take a seat." Said Avarak, looking up from the mountain of work before him. One thing that Avarak had yet to master was the art of, as humans called it, 'reading people' and he had found in his, albeit limited, interpersonal experience that it was best to give everyone a blank slate. An unfortunate side effect of which, was that we would often come off to people that he was just meeting as being either standoffish or aloof. Though not entirely out of character for a Vulcan.
"Thank you sir" replied Ensign Thenis. She took a seat and sat at the position of attention, she handed Lieutenant Avarak her PADD that contained her orders assigning her to the Sunfire. She also knew it contained her Academy service record. She was also aware that Vulcans could come across as aloof and standoffish, so she was not to concerned by her department head demeanor. She only hoped her educational accomplishments would impress him, especially considering how most species felt about Orions, and in particular Green Female Orions.
Avarak took the PADD and briefly read over her service record. "An impressive background, Ensign." He said
"Thank you sir. It was not easy, but the rewards were well worth it." she replied. Hoping her pride and ego didn't override her accomplishments.
"For members of my department, I have only one expectation: I expect you to be excellent at everything." Said the science officer. "Put in your best effort for every task that is placed before you will find your time on the Sunfire, at least in this department, smooth and rewarding." Said Avarak
"Understood sir. I was raised and taught that only your best should ever be presented in any endeavor one undertakes." replied Ensign Thenis. Sensing that she had been dismissed, she stood and went to the position of attention "Will there be anything else sir?"
"I would like to see the science lab I will be working in. I know that is not protocol, that I am supposed to report to medical than the ship's counselor after I report to you, but I am eager to see my lab and office." said Ensign Thenis, hoping yet again she did not present as to eager to start into her scientific endeavors.
"Very good, Ensign. I was as eager to get started on work as you on my first assignment." Said Avarak. He got the distinct impression that he and this new science officer would be working quite well together.
"Thank you sir." with that Ensign Thenis rendered a salute and did an about face and left the CSO office.
Avarak sat up straight in his chair to return the salute but she had already left his office. He hadn't been out of the Academy for long himself, but he had learned quite quickly that the strict regimentation that is instilled in students quite quickly dissipates when they reach the fleet, at least depending on the unit that they're assigned. He picked up his PADD once again and continued getting caught up on his work.
