Personality & Traits

General Overview On the surface, Avarak is the prototypical Vulcan: emotionally detached and logical beyond reproach, but peal back the logical veneer and one finds a much more complicated person. Ever since childhood, Avarak has struggled to control his emotions and no matter what he tries, he hasn't been able to fully quiet the storm that brews just beneath the surface. Avarak understood the benefits of leading a logical life on an intellectual level; he has experienced first-hand the manner of person that a Vulcan fully embracing his emotions can be, but is still struggling hard to internalize it. In an attempt to rein in his emotions, so to speak, he attempted to reach kolinahr. Avarak failed to reach kolinahr and this would mark what he would consider his first major failure.

Avarak is fiercely dedicated to his work and spends most of his spare time working on his research in the science lab. It is said by those who know him that he practically lives in the lab. Time spent in his quarters is mostly for rest; namely sleep and meditation as well as his attempts to master the game of Kal'toh. He understands the purpose of socializing with his crewmates, however he is used to being alone and so interacting with his fellow crewmates and even making friends is something that will take practice for him. He views this, among other things, a challenge that he must overcome.
Strengths & Weaknesses Avarak is intelligent, inquisitive and fiercely dedicated to his work. While this makes him a good worker, his insecurities, stemming from growing up in an accomplished family and being unable to gain entry into the Vulcan Science Academy while his brother did, make it difficult for him to get along with his crewmates. He frequently uses his academic accomplishments prior to joining Starfleet in a vain attempt to place himself above his comrades which, naturally, makes it difficult for him to make friends.
Ambitions Avarak wants to marry his passion for science with a desire to effect change in people’s lives. He believes that the best way to do that would be on a Federation Starship, practicing and discovering new science on the frontier, while also gaining experiences that none in his family have had.

Personal History Avarak was born to Verat, a Professor at the Vulcan Science Acadamey and T'Liss, a Diplomat. His was a relatively uneventful upbringing; his mother raised him on the Vulcan colony of Prat on the edge of Federation space. He spent many of his formative years with only his mother and older brother Vaatik, while his father remained on Vulcan to teach at the eponymous Science Academy. Avarak has struggled to contain his emotions since a young age which, especially when raised around other Vulcans, made it difficult for him to fit in. His older brother was a stellar student and has since gone on become an Associate Professor of Nano Biology at the Vulcan Science Academy, alongside their father. Avarak made three attempts to enter the Academy himself, when he came of age, but failed all three, disappointing his father a great deal; or however disappointed a Vulcan is permitted to be. He then decided to apply to the University of Alpha Centauri at which he was not only admitted but excelled. His first paper was published in his third year of undergraduate studies which has since been cited hundreds of times. His graduate thesis was completed in less than a year and everyone of his peers expected him to accept the postdoctoral position that was offered to him.

When Avarak went on vacation to the human colony on Varbatten III, he discovered his true calling. He realized that while there was a lot of good that he could do in the Institute on Alpha Centauri, he also knew that the discoveries that he made, ground-breaking as they may be, would have little impact on the common person. He decided then to enrole in Starfleet Academy so that he could put his knowledge of the Universe to the test, help people in need, and see, first-hand, the impact of his work. There were many equally capable individuals back on Alpha Centauri who could make equally ground-breaking discoveries themselves so, he felt, his decision was only logical
Service Record After graduating from the University of Alpha Centauri, Avarak was offered a post-doctoral fellowship at the Sorak Institue of Theoretical Physics at UAC. Before accepting the fellowship, Avarak wanted to travel; he had spent his entire life in school and while he spent many of his formative years on a Vulcan Colony on a Federation Border Planet, he wanted to see how the other colonists lived. He decided that he would then dedicate his life to helping others and being able to witness the effects that his knowledge of the Universe would have.

His time in the Academy was rather uneventful; he spent most of his time studying although, as elected to major in the very subject in which he recently gained a Ph.D, most of his time studying was spent studying engineering, specifically Warp Systems. This aligned with his interests in physics which primarily focuses on researching alternative means of interstellar transportation.

He didn't have very many friends in the Academy as he preferred solitude. He told himself that it was because he worked better alone but the real reason was that he was too arrogant for most of his peers to handle. Having a Ph.D in physics, he often, albeit unintentionally, flaunted his additional knowledge, much to the distaste of fellow cadets.

In his final year, in an attempt to fill his spare time as well as at the behest at his Academy Counselor to socialize, began studying Suus Mahna, a Vulcan martial art. He excelled and in his fourth year he placed second in an Academy championship, bringing an exciting end to his Academy career.
