Command Evaluation - Kla'ren Pt 3

Posted on Mon Jul 19th, 2021 @ 4:11pm by Remal Kajun & Captain Rhenora Kaylen & Lieutenant Commander Thriss Kla'ren

Mission: Gamma Quadrant
Location: Holodeck 1
Timeline: Recertification Week

-snip-The simulation dissolved into the black and gold of the holodeck, signaling the scenario was complete. Rhenora exhaled and stretched, her spine popping as the muscles moved. "Over to you" She smiled to her husband as a comfortable chair appeared in the center of the holodeck - bathed in light.-snip-

The chair was there for Thriss to have a seat, while Remal stood and approached from the outer edge of the holodeck grid. "Not bad Lieutenant. How do you feel about your performance during the simulation?"

Rhenora kept back, merely observing the conversation that was to take place - Thriss has performed well however the psychological component was for Remal.

"While I am unsure of the results of the test, I managed to save the Sunfire and her crew with some losses. However, I question my decision-making leading up to this outcome" the Chief answered honestly. "I question whether or not I did the right thing with some of the choices I made."

"If perchance, you had the opportunity to do things differently, what, and how, would you change things in your favor? For, as they say, hindsight is 40-40." Remal smiled a comforting smile.

"First of all, I could have transferred controls to engineering, so I could command the ship and aid in repairs, while keeping life support stable on the bridge. After all, with our technology, we can do multiple things remotely."

"It wasn't just that though. If I had of been faster getting the engines back online, then maybe the Captain and some of the other crew could have survived in that scenario" Thriss said as he looked at the Counselor.

"Maybe. It is difficult to know what might have been. I'm glad to see you didn't second guess yourself while in the moment. A Command officer must be able to think on their feet and not second guess themselves until the day is done." He gave a glance at Rhenora, then continued.

"As an officer, you utilized the tools and assets at hand. You relied upon those who were under your command. Did you feel divided in any way, like maybe there was a lack of trust between you and those under you, to get the job done?"

"There wasn't really any lack of trust. At least not visibly."

Rhenora returned Remal's look, knowing full well she was guilty of holding everything together during the day then falling apart at the end of a hard day.

"You achieved the desired outcome Chief, your crew are alive, and technology didn't fall into enemy hands. What ifs are a dangerous trap to fall into." She smiled kindly at the chief.

He listened to the Captain's words. She was right. "That is very true Captain."

"Now, unless Remal has any further comments, take some time to process the experience, then I'd appreciate an update on the repair schedule," Rhenora replied, knowing what a grueling experience most command evaluations were.

"If we begin throwing in the paperwork portion of Command into the test, everyone will fail. Plus I'd need a cot instead of a chair." Remal joked. "But no, I have no further questions. Well done Lieutenant." Remal offered the man his hand in a friendly gesture. "Computer, end program."

The holodeck dissolved into a grid with just the three of them standing in the center.

"Thank you" he said looking at the Chief and then at the Captain. "I'll have that update on your desk within the hour. When can we expect our results for the evaluation?"

Rhenora took a breath "I'll submit my report along with the recording and Remal's report in to Starfleet Command. We should have the results back in a few days but from what I have seem Chief, you don't have anything to worry about."

"Understood" he said. "Well, seeing as the Jem'Hadar battle damaged the transwarp prototype and many of our other systems, and since I have that report to write, I have my work cut out for me. It shouldn't be anything I can't handle."

" I'm sure it's not Chief, and I thank you for all your hard work, your team's work has been exemplary" The Captain praised.

Lieutenant Kla'ren walked out of the holodeck. He was able to get an ideal conclusion, but not without casualties, including the Captain. He did question some of his decision-making, and he wondered how he could have gone about the scenario differently, and get an even better outcome. This was what CO's had to deal with on a day-by-day basis, making tough, sometimes regrettable decisions. This would be something he would be required to deal with if he were given a command of his own one day.
