1,607 words; about a 8 minute read

Mission: Beholder
Location: Security Office- Uss Sunfire
Timeline: Before the Sunfire left Earth

ON:
=Security Office- USS Sunfire=
Michael sat in the security office, going over reports that has stacked up on his desk. He looked at one pad that was to do with Operations and the requisitions for the photon torpedoes and the new weapons systems for the Sunfire. This was not very good in the way that this was being handled from the report in front of him stated that majority of the weapons systems including the photon torpedoes well not to be delivered until Tuesday, but that was not the worst thing he had to report this to the senior officer and that was Commander Dean house who wasn't going to be that pleased when he found out, but now yet to tell him.

He tapped his combadge and opened the channel =/\= Stevens to Commander House, I need to see you in the security office right away. I have just received a report that needs your attention, as it is the weapons systems. When can you be here?=/\= As he leaned back in his chair and hoped that the Commander would not take his head off when he found out.

Dean raised an eyebrow. Tapping his commbadge, "On my way." Piviting and heading back for the Turbolift he previously stepped out of.

After closing the channel on Commander House, Michael opened another one and spoke clearly =/\= would Lieutenant Rosen, please report to the Security Office ASAP=/\= as he now needed the Operations Chief as to why this was missing.

"Remember, the deflector configuration is saved as an individual file every time you adjust. Engineering doesn't like it when these begin to add up after a while. So as a courtesy to keep them happy, if your modification isn't necessary, make sure to delete it at the end of your shift." Jacob said to an office full of Ops Officers when he heard the page.

=^= "Acknowledged. On the way."=^= Jacob said with a tap to his commbadge, already heading out the door. The Security Chief's office was only a deck away, and Jacob made good time. He thumbed the chime and stepped through, a friendly smile on his face.

"Lieutenant Stevens, I don't believe we've met. Jacob Rosen. What can I do for you?" He said, offering his hand.

Dean stepped in behind Jacob, looking to Stevens a moment. "Okay.."

" Nice to meet you, too," replied Michael, as he held his hand out for the Ops chef to take. He also noted that the Commander entered the room. He continued, " The reason I called you both here is this Security Matter that involves the three of us," as he handed the two officers a PADD for them to read.

Jacob took the PaDD and began flicking through it. "If this is about my clearance renewal, I thought I was good for another few years from my original background investigation." He said with a chuckle, coming to the spreadsheet portion. "Hmm."

"And...? You know you could spell it out, Lieutenant." Dean quipped.

"Well, as you can see Sir, everything we ordered is due next Tuesday," replied Michael. He continued," The Photon Torpedoes, the new Bio-Beds, including the Medical staff," looking back at both officers.

"The Captain only authorized a 48-hour liberty," Jacob said with a frown while flicking through the sheet. "We'll be gone before all this is delivered."

"Don't you think I know that, Lieutenant? "replied Michael, looking at the Ops chief, "From a Security point of view, we will be defenseless. " He stated and hoped the Commander would agree with him. He finished, "This needs to be brought to the Captain."

Jacob took a moment to reply after the retort. The Chief Security Officer was frustrated at the situation, not him personally. Jacob barely knew the man.

Looking up from his PaDD, he offered a placating smile. "I agree this is a challenge. I don't like involving the Captain with problems that don't have solutions. We have the Commander here." Jacob nodded deferentially to Commander House. "Let's think of some answers and if at the end of it the good Commander still does not feel confident it is his prerogative."

Jacob tapped a few commands into the wall console. "Now there are presently 6 ships in Spacedock being actively replenished with the Sunfire being in last place." He smirked at the two officers. "We just need to be pushed to the front of the line."

"Well, then I would say, get after it. I'll keep an eye out," Dean smiled. "There are certain ways to expediate things and even get them to us as long as we aren't to far out of system."

"I have an idea, you both will need to trust me and uh... look intimidating." Jacob said turning back to the panel and typing commands. "The Deputy Requisition Officer for this particular Starbase is a Lieutenant Commander Tuv Yoren. He and I have a bit of history." Tapping a final command, Jacob stepped back between Michael and Dean, facing the viewer as it shifted from the logo of the United Federation of Planets to a middle aged Tellarite with wispy hair and a scowling expression.

"Lieutenant Jacob Rosen. As I live and breathe. I see you still are the ugliest example of human I have ever laid eyes on." Chortled Yoren.

"I would say that is rich coming from a man with a face only a mother could love, but I have strong suspicions you are the result of a failed experiment by the scientists of Tellar Prime and therefore have no mother, my dear Commander." Jacob replied, shooting back with a wide smile.

"Hah!" Yoren laughed with a smack of his palm upon his desk. "Enough pleasantries. What do you want and how can I deny it?"

"I need a favor my friend." Jacob said turning to business equally as quickly. "I need you to move our resupply timeline up to immediate."

"Absolutely not. Sunfire was last to arrive, they are the last in priority. First in first out."

"That is a shame Tuv." Jacob said with a nearly over the top dramatic sigh. and gesture towards the viewscreen. "And understandable too. No doubt about that. Everyone has their regulations that we are all very much bound by."

Yoren narrowed his eyes, cynicism spreading across his lined and craggy face. "Rosen..." He said with a growl.

"I do have, an opportunity though." Jacob said, snapping his finger as if the idea had come to him just then. "You see, Lieutenant Stevens here." Jacob clapped him on the shoulder, embracing the Security Chief with a jovial familiarity. "Has been working on an investigation for Starfleet Security looking into just how exactly contraband such as Romulan Ale makes its way onto our ships."

The Tellarite suddenly became nervous, sputtering and failing to put together a coherent sentence. "Jacob. You. How DARE you."

Jacob continued in a crisp and matter of fact tone, "Now in recognition of my cooperation with the investigation, Commander House." He nodded toward the Commander. "Has offered me terms. Reduction in rank to Ensign, 90 days restriction, 90 days Extra Punitive Duties. All of which are a Bargain I must say."

Jacob smiled continuing. "Now, here's where we can make use of this opportunity my dear Commander Yoren. You move the Sunfire to the next in line for resupply, and perhaps Lieutenant Stevens is unable to find conclusive evidence for this Starbase in his investigation and moves on." Jacob's smile turned predatory. "Whaddaya say Commander, do we have a deal?" He looked to Commander House, deceptive trepidation entering his voice. "Although, I don't think it stays on the table for long by my estimation.

A long moment of silence passed between them. A palpable tension filling the space between them. This was the point of negotiations in which whoever spoke first, would lose.

"Fine. Rosen. We have a deal." Tuv finally said after an agonizing few seconds. "The Sunfire's resupply will begin immediately, my autonomous drones are now in route." He said tapping commands into his console. "Estimated time to completion, 5 hours." His voice sounded deflated, as if the Tellarite had been awake for several days.

"Thank you Commander. We do appreciate your flexibility." Jacob said respectfully, with a deferential nod of his head.

"Harumph."

The viewscreen abruptly returned to the standard logo of the Federation. Turning to the other two officers. "That went easier than expected. I guess we won't have to convince the Captain to stay until Tuesday after all." Jacob said lightly.

"You're welcome and, it's no problem. They shouldn't have had this delay knowing what we've been through and what we need." Dean nodded a little bit."I'll let her know, though.." He looked at his wrist as if he had a watch on. "She probably is getting a message about right now."

Meanwhile Captain Kaylen sat in her ready room, cup of cooling coffee in her hand as she worked on the eulogy she would deliver the next morning. They only had a brief layover at Earth - enough to get the supplies they needed, lay Batel to rest and then get back out into space to find another problem to get their teeth into.

She mused over the wording - too familiar... not formal enough? Ever the worst self critic. She was about to scrub the last 3 lines when a message came in.

'Resupply requisition - in progress'

"Eh?"" Rhenora mused, and scrolled through the message - realising that the Sunfire would have only just been resupplied before she left orbit. Poor planning on Rhenora's part of course. Somehow - they had been moved up the line.
