| Personal History | Jacob was born to a modest household, the youngest of two children. His mother was a career enlisted woman in Starfleet and his father was a high school science teacher. He grew up traveling back and forth between his mother's fleet postings and when they would get a shore posting and could live in their parent's hometown in the Pacific Northwest. Jacob was never the most well rounded student. He would excel at the subjects he was interested in but slack in his other classes, to his father's dismay this led to him not having the university options his older brother David had. Following in his mother's footsteps, Jacob enlisted in Starfleet as a Propulsion Technician. Finding his place for the first time he excelled at his technical training and duties. By the time he was promoted to Petty Officer 3rd Class he also applied to Starfleet Academy to earn a degree and become an officer. He was accepted 6 months later. At the Academy Jacob was driven to succeed, and it was there he met his eventual spouse Lauren who married him the day after their graduation. As an Ensign, Jacob was assigned as a junior Operations Officer aboard the USS Marquam. During the battle of the Tyra system the ship was destroyed, Jacob was able to rig a lifeboat together out of half an airlock and a portable force field generator. However, he would lose consciousness due to excess carbon dioxide and be one of the few survivors. Jacob carries this survivor's guilt with him to this day. Due to his traumatic experience he retreated into himself, barely completing his required counseling to return to duty. For the next several years he was on autopilot at work and in his relationships. By his own admission he was a lousy friend and a lousy husband, ultimately he understood why Lauren filed for divorce and they remain friends. Slowly, with more counseling after the end of the war Jacob started coming back to himself. The grief and the guilt were still there but not oppressive most days. He began to perform adequately again, eventually excelling to the point where he received his promotion to Lieutenant. Jacob isn't where he wants to be just yet. He still feels as if he's living for lost friends and hasn't quite figured out how to live for himself. With each successive assignment he feels that he is figuring out more about who he is now, what he wants out of life, and where he wants to be. |
