Considerations Over Coffee

:: Starbase 247 ::

“Schematics... blueprints... another blueprint... another schematic...” Lieutenant Burt Quaid was currently sat in one of the several coffee shops that lined the Starbase promenade, looking through PADD after PADD of information about the USS Sunfire. He had recently received the news of his promotion and reassignment to Sunfire as its new Chief Engineering Officer.

He moved the PADDs around to create more space on the small circular table, and almost knocked his caramel cappuccino onto his cinnamon swirl dessert. “Jeez...” he cursed under his breath, thankful that he didn’t knock over the searing hot beverage, “... I think I’ll report to Sunfire and get these bits and peaces into my office in main engineering.”

He collected the PADDs into a neat pile before dropping them unceremoniously into the satchel he had been carrying around with him. He got to his feet, finished off his cappuccino, grabbed the dessert and headed towards the docking bays.


:: USS Sunfire ::

Burt stepped onto the deck of the ship that would be his home for the foreseeable. He knew the Sunfire had an established history, and he hoped that he would be able to live up to any expectations that had been placed upon him.

The Akira-class vessel had been under the care of two previous chief engineering officers, with each of them having their own ways of doing things. Lieutenant Paxton was generally seen as being a hard-headed officer that chewed anyone out for the smallest mistakes, and Chief Petty Officer Taazk was found to be mostly absent from his duties. It wouldn’t be hard to make a decent impression on the engineering team if those were the kind of people that had been in charge previously.

Looking down the corridors, Burt tried to remember from his memory of the schematics which way would be quickest to get him to the bridge. Left or right from here... he couldn’t remember. Picking a direction, he moved forward and down the corridor that lay before him. He was sure he’d reach the bridge sooner or later.
