Reminiscences

756 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Character Development
Location: USS Sunfire
Timeline: Current

Morning came early, 0430-ish, early. Her papa used to tell her that waking up that early gave him Scales. Then whether she asked or not he would follow it up with, 'you know, a dragon-ass disease'. Between his dad like humor and his ability to misquote historical people, whether fictional or non, Bonnie always held an internal smile and love of all things punny.

She always knew his mis-quotes were purposeful and served two functions. Not only did they make her smile, but they made her think. She often found herself looking up the real quote just to appease her logical mind. What better way to understand what was funny about a mis-quote than to know the original first.

For some reason, this was what was on her mind as her feet hit the floor for the day. Mind reeling on puns and things, she quickly began to think about Anna, the doctor on the Liberty she has found quite pun filled. The woman even had mugs for her variety of teas, each with their own cute puns and sayings.

As Bonnie stepped into the sonic shower, she started thinking about Sapphire, the short blue Andorian woman Anna had introduced her to. They had experienced a brief, interlude, one might call it. It had started with a dinner and a lesson on a female warrior named Boudica, but it became a full dress in blue pigment and skin tattoos and by the end both women found each other, at least for a while.

These thoughts came full circle as she thought about her Papa once more and his love for ancient artifacts, and just History in general. He was a curator for the Smithsonian Museum on Earth until his passing a few months prior. She and Dean had built a Multi-Sector Transporter and with enough time, power and testing, had managed a trip to Earth and back for her Papa's Celebration of Life Ceremony.

The trip was memorable in that together they attended the Celebration of Life, then somehow managed to commandeer an Ancient Airplane before having some dinner at a local diner. Afterwards there was an amusing attempt at some dancing before they made it back to Bonnie's Papa's house. The next morning the transporter brought them back on schedule. The whole trip was sort of surreal.

Upon their return, Bonnie and Dean had each found a new level of their companionship. She knew, if given the chance, Dean would choose to be 'more' than friends. Bonnie on the other hand was not of the same mind. She still saw Dean as a co-worker and close friend who made the best Deanwhiches she had ever eaten. Actually, the only Deanwhiches she had ever eaten. Their relationship didn't matter much now anyway as Bonnie had heard a rumor about Dean and Commander Baldric, one she intended to tease him about.

Stepping out of the shower, her mind was still jumping from one subject to another causing her focus to be minimal. She wrapped a towel around herself and her hair before finishing her morning routine on auto-pilot. Her usual morning routine would normally last an hour, maybe a little more if she wasn't distracted. This particular morning, everything was a distraction.

Somewhere along the way she found herself thinking about Kit, and how they had worked so hard to put out the plasma fires when the ship crashed on the prehistoric planet. The green-skinned Orion always had this smell that Bonnie liked and a fierce temperment that Bonnie feared. Kit was always friendly, even when she was holding her knife out for show.

Bonnie opened her PADD to review the day ahead and instead found herself lost in far away news reports and the latest technological finds. There was still nothing about a couple who had traversed sectors via transporter. Perhaps for the best as the process still had some major kinks to work out.

Her face made up, her teeth clean, the day ahead was an off-duty sort of day. With the upcoming shore leave Bonnie was looking for something to do. She spotted it, at the bottom of another article, like an advert they thought they'd bury. She noticed, however, as if it had called to her. Or rather her Papa.

"Come to Risa. Visit one of our glamorous moons and uncover the archaeologist within. This month only, we'll be hosting a dig of the ages for those brave enough, bold enough, to join us. " An off-putting Ferengi declared.

She clicked the link.
