The Journey Home - Day 1 continued

Posted on Tue Aug 13th, 2024 @ 9:52pm by Commander Jennifer Baldric & Commander Jenna Ramthorne

Mission: Lost in Space
Location: USS Sunfire - Deep Deep Space
Timeline: Current

Commander Jennifer Baldric waited, anxious of the always looming threat of attack deep within enemy territory. True to their word so far the Whales had been ignored by both the Borg and Species 8472. The huge whales grazed on whatever space energy took their fancy, slowly moving from place to place as their noses led them.

"Ops, identify what exactly it is they're munching on and where a rich pocket is. I want to be able to collect some so we can feed them when we reach Federation space again." The ship's acting CO announced.

Bonnie was not Ops, but was invested. Even as their shift grew late as their first 24 hours of travel had faired well so far, she knew there was still 48 hours or so left to travel. "From what the sensors are showing, it appears they are ingesting a form of Hellium Hydride, a noble gas and what looks like a form of Triatomic Oxygen knows as O3." Bonnie reported. "Sensors are showing a large pocket 0.5 killocams by 15 degrees to port, ma'am."

"Helm, set a course for that pocket. Ops, open the Bussard collectors and store as much of that stuff as we can" Jennifer ordered as she rose to get a better look at the whales.

"Aye." Jenna calculated the vector needed and turned the ship towards the gas pockets indicated on her tactical display. The Sunfire swooped down and then angled up in order to best capture the gasses in the collectors housed on the front of the Warp Nacelles underneath the ship. She then slowed the ship so as to collect as much as possible.

"Ma'am the whales are moving off" the Ops officer said abruptly as the whales reformed into their pod and began to head back towards Federation space.

"Match their course and speed. Keep within the center of the pod" Baldric replied almost immediately, her anxiety rising with the possibility they may be left behind in dangerous territory.

"Aye. Matching course and speed. Reentering pod control in 3... 2... 1... " The Sunfire slid once more into the pocket between the whale pod, just as a large whale came up behind them closing the hole. Without hesitation the pod then jumped back into the slip-bridge as though the whole thing was a carefully orchestrated ballet.
