Engineering

Mission:
Planet of the Dinosaurs
Location: Engineering
Timeline: Just after the crash
Dr Sarah Wilson met with Lt Leone on her way to Engineering. The damage control teams were having a tough time getting through main engineering where she suspected the majority of the casualties were. Ronson tagged along the rear, tricorder and basic medkit slung from his shoulder and ready to help. It wasn't his first rodeo, being Captain Kaylen's Yeoman for some years now. It wasn't his first crash, wasn't his first time with injured crewmen.
" We're nearly there" Sarah advised as they picked their way carefully through the debris, fallen bulkheads and some kind of toxic fumes everywhere. A full medical backup detail followed them, removing the injured and dead as they were found and conveying them back to either sickbay or the morgue.
Blake nodded her understanding. Dr. Wilson knew the more about healthcare than she did. "Just tell me where you need me", she told the Doc as she looked at their surroundings. "I hope those in engineering is okay. But by the look of it, I admit I'm not too optimistic", she added sadly.
"I need you to pick a path through this debris that will get us to main engineering" Sarah replied as they came across another collapsed bulkhead that was blocking their path. No wonder no-one had been able to get out of there yet. She looked at her own tricorder and tried to make sense of the sensor data.
Blake nodded. "There's some debris over there that seems moveable", she said, pointing to her right. "With a bit of force, we should be able to get it out of the way. Seems like it's blocking a door as well", she went on.
"That'll get us into Engineering, I'll give you a hand" Sarah put down her medkit and pushed up her already stained sleeves, moving the debris along with Ronson and Blake. 10 minutes later she could access the door to Engineering and the control panel to the right hand side of it. She removed the cover and used the manual override lever, releasing the maglock on the door and allowing it to be pushed open manually. It took three of them to force the door open, revealing the carnage within.
Sarah stepped through first, medkit back in hand and heading towards the closest injured crewman.
Thriss slowly awoke from his unconsciousness. For real this time. He had been in and out since the crash, and so his memory of the crash was spotty, but the last thing he remembered was Risa dragging him, possibly to sickbay. But now, he was leaning against a bulkhead. He turned his head in all directions, and there was no sign of anyone yet.
The Andorian grabbed a hold of the wall to help himself up. He felt a little light headed. He probably had a concussion, not the mention the many cuts and bruises all over his body. Once he was up he looked around of a moment to get an idea of where he was. He realized he was only a corridor and a half from engineering. He began to move towards his home away from home. With urgency. He had a gut feeling that the state of the engine room was worse than he thought.
Ronson turned when he heard a noise behind him, he had been scouting for more wounded in the corridors around Engineering as Dr Wilson and Blake headed inside. He saw who he thought was Lt Kla'ren although the exact identity was difficult in the smoke haze and the damage to the officers body and uniform. The Yoeman headed over with haste, slinging the medkit over his head and half opening it on the way.
"Chief, you'll be okay" he said simply as he confirmed Thriss' identity and started to take stock of his injuries. A hypo for this, some antiseptic for that, and the odd bandage or two and although far from fine, the Andorian was no longer at risk of bleeding to death from his injuries. "We crashed, but the majority of the crew are alive. Doc Wilson and a few others are working their way through Engineering to tend to your crew"
"Thank you" he turned his head around to look for Risa. When he didn't see her he turned back to look at Ronson. "Any idea where Commander Risa is? I was in and out of consciousness and I vaguely recall her pulling me away from engineering. I woke up leaning against a bulkhead with no sign of her" The Chief inquired.
Ronson looked up and down the corridor as he continued to treat Thriss. "I'm sorry, I haven't seen her, but help is arriving to search and treat everyone. I'm sure we'll find her soon"
"Thank you Chief. I do hope she's alright. One moment she's dragging me to sickbay and the next moment shes gone" he shook his head and then spoke up again. "Am I all clear to be returned to duty under the circumstances?
Blake regarded the chaos around her. And here she had thought that other people were as lucky as the diplomatic department. How naive of her. The engineering department was an absolute mess. She spotted a man under some debris to her left. "There's a man trapped over there", Blake told the people around her. "The debris seemed like it can be pushed to the right side without injuring him even more".
Sarah moved over, tricorder already open and scanning. The man was critically injured, to the point where the next few minutes were going to be vitally important. "Don't bother about the debris, I need you to put your hands here, and press firmly." Sarah instructed, showing Blake how to apply pressure to the wound to staunch the bleeding until she could get a pressure bandage going.
"On it", Blake replied as she did as requested. While she didn't particularly like blood, she knew this was a matter of life or death. If her getting bloody saved a life, she was fine with it. Saving lives was the main priority right now. "You better stay alive", she told the injured man. "Dr. Wilson is working on getting help for everyone". She paused, thinking her words over. It was true, but Blake was worried they might not be able to save all. It was a depressing thought, but it was the reality right now.
After a few moments the bandage was in situ and the man's vitals had stablised enough for Sarah to motion Blake to relax. "Good job there, He'll be fine once we get him to sickbay." She smiled a reassuring smile "The transport crew should be a few minutes behind us, leave him and we'll keep searching for survivors."
"Yes, Ma'am", Blake said and stood. Looking around, she knew that there were way more injured around their group. She spotted some legs from under some debris. "Here is one", she told Dr. Wilson. "Not sure whether this one is alive though". Blake looked around, scanning the area in her mind. "There's another one over there, leaning against the wall. Seems like she's still alive", she told Dr. Wilson as she approached the injured woman.
"First order of triage, save who you can" Sarah grimaced as she passed two more dead crewmen on her way to the one who was still alive. "I'll show you how to do a basic bio scan and ascertain injuries." She scooted over next to Blake and showed her the medical tricorder, pulling her spare out of her medkit. "This function tells us if there is any brain activity, if there's nothing, move on. This one tells us if there are critical injuries, and this one, major and minors. If anything comes up red here, call me over, overwise they may be in pain but they'll live. We should have backup here fairly soon" Sarah instructed.
Blake accepted the medical tricorder and started looking. She found one dead woman against the far wall. Thankfully the next person she found was still alive. Using the tricorder, she found that the man had some serious injuries. A broken left leg, right forearm and it seemed like his right wrist was broken too. "Dr. Wilson", Blake called. "I found one that is alive. Seems like he has some broken bones and minor cuts". She pulled out some cloth she had brought with from the diplomatic department's medkit. "I need to wrap wrist at the the very least", she told the injured man. "It'll hurt" she went on.
Sarah watched on as Blake treated the injury with a deft confidence. For someone thrown in the deep end of emergency medicine she was doing a stellar job. " Good work" Sarah smiled as she moved to the next patient, a young crewman with a gaping chest wound. What was it with chest injuries?
With dogged determination the pair worked their way through Engineering, triaging those that were alive, taking note of those that weren't. The backup medical team arrived and started taking the wounded to the shuttle bay and sickbay for treatment, leaving the two women standing in the middle of the carnage.
" Another uniform bites the dust" Wilson grumbled as she wiped her bloodied hands on her uniform, smearing greens and reds everywhere yet again.
"Looks like the department's current project in this room exploded when the ship got hit. There's a lot of shrapnel lying about. That is likely what has caused all the chest injuries", Blake said, looking around. There had clearly been some kind of metal structure in the room. Her guess was that the structure had had flammable contents in, or on, it.
As for Dr. Wilson's compliment, Blake said, "I grew up in a civilized warzone. As I didn't pick a side, my free time was either spent at home with my mom, or at the school doctor's office". Blake smiled at the memory. "The doctor there, Dr. Hall, didn't mind me helping her out. All extracurricular activities were marked by the feud in the area. One, from what i heard, has lasted for several generations. I figured I might as well learn a bit about tending wounds instead of picking a side. Dr. Hall had a few patients with broken bones over the years, so she took me into her office to learn how to stabilize broken bones".
" Well Dr Hall would be proud, you've done a stellar job. It won't take long for the transfer teams to take the wounded out and the dead will be recorded." Sarah took a deep breath, the adrenaline of the last few hours ebbing now the crisis was over. Her heads shook slightly, reminding her of the need for rest and food. " Shall we get cleaned up and grab something to eat? I can't remember the last time I ate"
Blake nodded. "We need food to continue working later. And a good nap wouldn't hurt either. I've lost count of how long we've been here", she admitted. "And both of us, and everyone else for that matter, have been awake for longer than what is healthy, if I'm going to venture a guess".
"You're right on both fronts. Come on, let's get a snack and a nap and do it all again" Sarah wrapped an arm around Blake's shoulder and they both walked out of Engineering.
