Alison made her way to Sickbay, now she was twelve weeks into her pregnancy it was time for her latest maternity check up. She was surprised to be already showing, if only a small amount.
"Good morning" Sarah smiled as the doors of sickbay opened to reveal Alison. It seemed babies were on the rise on the Sunfire, first Aurora, then Alison and the Captain. Speaking of which, she needed to poke the Captain to come in for her weekly check up. She turned her attention to her current patient and patted the biobed.
"How are *we* doing today?"
“We are feeling just fine, thank you” Alison smiled as she walked over to the biobed before hopping up onto it and lying down. “Actually I’m a little surprised, I’m already starting to show and I don’t remember showing this early with either of my other children.”
" Don't be surprised, your body knows what it's doing. Every pregnancy you begin to show a little earlier, things stretch a little easier and a little quicker" Sarah smiled as she reach for her tricorder and began the routine scans. " How have you been feeling lately?"
“Much better now my morning sickness has gone” Alison smiled. “I do get pretty tired from time to time, but having had children before I know that’s to be expected.”
" You're lucky, I had someone in here last week who was in her third trimester and still had morning sickness. She was well and truly over it" Sarah snorted as she took more readings from her tricorder, overall it seemed Alison's body was working a little harder that the Doc would have liked.
" Hrmmmmmm" She murmoured as she changed scans on her tricorder.
Alison looked at Sarah in concern, “Is there something wrong?!”
Sarah looked up, realising she'd been frowning and didn't have her best poker face on. A slip up due to stress and fatigue no doubt. Carefully schooling her features back to a neutral expression she looked at the scan again.
"No nothing's wrong, everything is looking fine... I just wasn't expecting... two" She looked up at Alison.
Alison gave Sarah a shocked look, she opened her mouth to speak but for a moment nothing came out. “I... I’m sorry... did you say... two??”
" I did indeed" Sarah cautiously looked towards Alison who seemed to be processing that particular detail for the moment.
“Twins...” Alison paused for a moment. “I’m having twins!” Her shocked expression lit up with excitement. “That’s amazing!!”
"Unexpected? Is there a family history of twins?" Sarah asked as she recorded the medical data for future reference.
“Not that I know of!” Alison grinned. “This is going to come as one hell of a surprise to Tom, and to Mandy! Is everything going alright? I’m guessing that’s why I’m showing so early?”
" That would be why" Sarah replied, putting down the medical tricorder and palpating the firm abdomen with her hands. Sometimes you just needed to feel things for yourself. " Ok there's one.... and... there.... is the other" There was a pause as she felt for the solidifying bones of each child.
Alison always found maternity examinations fascinating. “I’ve had two children before, but years apart. I’m not sure what to expect with a pregnancy involving twins. Will I need to take extra vitamins? Increase the intake of my diet?” She looked up at Sarah for advice.
" I think the most important thing is to listen to your body" Sarah replied as she helped Alison sit back up again " If you're hungry - eat, if you're tired - rest. Now more than ever you need to tune in" She said carefully " Now is not the time to push yourself. A normal pregnancy is a strain on the body, but twins is something else again"
Alison nodded. “I’ll do that I promise! This is going to be one hell of a surprise for Tom and Mandy.”
"I'm sure it will be. In the meantime, rest up as much as you can, and if you still feel fatigued, I can give you some additional nutritional supplements" Sarah smiled, "go tell them the good news"
“I will” Alison smiled as she straightened her clothes and slid down off the biobed. “Thank you Doctor, I appreciate all your help.”
"You're more than welcome, now scat and tell your husband and family the news" Sarah made a good natured shooing motion.
