Meeting the Science Chief

Posted on Wed Jun 16th, 2021 @ 4:08am by Lieutenant JG Avarak & Commander Savar cha'Salik hei-Surak Talek-sen-deen

Mission: Gamma Quadrant
Location: Savar's Office
Timeline: Before Combat Drill & Engineering Repairs

Savar sat in his office and looked at the PaDD in front of him. it contained the service record of Lt. jg Avarak.

He looked forward to talking with a fellow Vulcan, to get his insights to dealing and working with multitude nonVulcan species.

Avarak arrived at the First Officer’s office and pressed the door chime. He was eager to meet the Commander and was pleased to have a fellow Vulcan aboard, especially one at such a high level in the chain of command.

Hearing the chime sound, Savar surmised that Lt. Avarak was at his door. "Enter." He called out even as he straightened his tunic. Wishing to make the best possible impression with the Lieutenant.

At the Commander’s behest, the door hissed open and Avarak entered, standing at attention. As with his meeting with the Captain, Avarak always defaulted to the highest degree of formality, not because he was an especially formal person (by Vulcan standards, at least) but rather that he always found it best practice to err on the side of formality when meeting a superior.

“Good day, sir.” Avarak gave a polite head nod.

" Good day to you along with peace and long life to you Lieutenant." Savar replied. "Please have a seat. Would you like anything from the replicator? Before we begin."

"Peace and long life to you as well, sir. Jasmine tea would be acceptable." Said the science officer.

Savar mothed fluidly to the replicator to get Avarak his jasmine tea. Returning to the science chief he handed him the glass. "One jasmine tea," as he moved to sit behind his desk.

Avarak sat down in the chair opposite the XO's desk. It was comfortable but utilitarian, which Avarak had found to be a common theme throughout the Sunfire. She was an interesting class of ship and while the science facilities weren't as extensive as they were on a Galaxy or Intrepid class, they were adequate for an escort of its size. Avarak was confident that they would meet his need. "Yes, sir. I was introduced to jasmine tea by a classmate at the Academy."

"My wife is a tea drinker. I do indulge on occasion but for the most part I prefer fruit drinks." Savar paused for a moment to take in the man seated before him. He was professional in his appearance, with sharp, observant eyes. No doubted he was a highly capable officer. "Tell me Lieutenant what is your impression of the Sunfire?"

Avarak took a sip of his tea. “The Sunfire was one of the most requested assignments among my graduating class at the Academy.” He paused, taking another sip of his tea. “However, my previous scholastic experience notwithstanding, I can’t help but question the logic of assigning an officer with my limited experience to be chief of department on a ship of this size.”

"Perhaps I can assist you in seeing the logical of your being assigned here." Savar replied as he looked across his desk at the science chief. "The Sunfire is by definition an escort but that is a misnomer. She is designed to operate without assistance on her own for long period of time. Therefore it is logical to think that Command would want officers who are also able to operate on their own with out the backup of others. Captain Kaylen is a prime example of such and officer. She is able to make decisions on her own without having to rely on others. She can think outside the box as the humans refer to it. She is confident in her decisions, she believes in her ability and does not need others to justify her actions. I would further state that Command feels you are also such an officer Lieutenant. One who can also operate on his own and operate outside the box." Savar finished and waited got Avarak's reaction and reply.

Avarak nodded his head simply and took a large sip of his tea, assimilating the XO’s words. “In that case, sir, I will endeavour to meet your, and the command team’s, expectations.”

"I am confident you will be successful in your endeavor Lieutenant. Quite confident and in doing so, you will learn more of just what you are capable of." Savar replied.

“You have my appreciation, sir.” Avarak finished his tea and set the cup gently on the XO’s desk. “If that will be all, sir, I had planned on getting myself acquainted with the science lab on board.”

Savar nodded and stood. His hand open in the Vulcan salute. "Nothing else Lieutenant. Live long and prosper." He said to Avarak.

Avarak rose from his chair “live long and prosper.” He said, returning the Vulcan salute in kind. Avarak then turned and left the XO’s office, hearing the door hiss shut behind him.
