Following on from his conversation with the acting Captain, Burt decided now would be a good time to find his quarters. Luckily, there would be no farcical searching, Burt knew exactly where they were.

Usually, the Chief Engineer’s Quarters on an Akira-class ship would be on deck three. However, when he accepted the transfer to Sunfire, Burt wanted to be as close to main engineering as possible. Main Engineering was on deck 15, so deck 15 was where Burt wanted his quarters to be assigned.

The turbolift doors opened to reveal deck 15. Burt stepped out and walked the short distance to his quarters. He stood outside the door, which was labelled ‘15-C-0625’, and took a deep breath. These quarters were not senior officer quarters, but junior officer quarters. He wondered just how much smaller they would be.

He stepped into the room and started looking around. The first thing he noticed was that his belongings had made it onboard safe and sound. They had been piled neatly in the corner of the room. The second thing he noticed was the lack of a couch. He could see a desk that probably doubled as a dining table, a bed, and a bathroom. No couch, no window, and no other luxuries.

“At least it has a replicator.” He muttered. Moving towards the advanced piece of technology, he ordered his favourite hot beverage, “A frothy latte, warm, with a hint of sweetness.” The cup of coffee materialised within the replicator seconds later.

Taking a seat at his desk-table he listened out for the intense hum of the warp core. That was the whole point of requesting these quarters. After being an engineer for 13 years, he had realised that he couldn’t sleep properly without the loud hum of the warp core. He knew it was probably psychological, but the white noise of the engines always managed to send him off to sleep peacefully.

Hearing the thumping hum, much like a heartbeat, Burt smiled and took a sip of his latte. Suddenly all was right in his little world again.
