Medical History

Posted on Thu Jan 6th, 2022 @ 6:00am by Lieutenant Sarah Wilson & Lieutenant Niali Korial MD

Mission: Gamma Quadrant
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: During Away Mission

Dr Sarah Wilson sat in her office, trying to tidy up things before the ship's new CMO reported for duty. Sarah had been acting CMO for the last 12 months as the Captain tried to find a replacement capable to taking on the Akira class ships crew and families. It was a big job, and required a doctor of unique skills and intelligence to get the job done.

Sarah picked up the next pads in the pile, trying to get things in order to at least prove she was capable and not fumbling her way through things. Personnel medical files were usually the last thing on her to do list, and it showed recently. 'oh good Lord' she swore quietly as she picked up the Captain's. "Computer, access Captain Kaylen Rhenora's medical file and add addendum to this date" she started, and pulled up another pads where she's jotted down notes from the last time the Captain had graced her sickbay.

Niali walked down the corridor towards Sickbay, she was looking forward to this new start in her life following a what turned out to be a boring sabbatical on Trill. She was still coming to terms with her symbiont and previous host. Entering sickbay she walked to the office to see someone sitting in her seat.

“Good morning I am Niali Korial the new CMO and you?” She held her hand out in the human greeting.

"Oh Hi, ummmm welcome aboard" Sarah stammered and she nearly knocked over the cold coffee on the desk. "Umm thanks for dropping by, I was just trying to get everything in order for you" she felt her cheeks colour and the computer waited patiently for more information. "Awaiting data...please add current patient data"

Niali noted the mess surrounding the doctor and felt a momentary annoyance, she had an almost obsessive need for order. However she realised how hard it must have have been for her over the last 12 months. She took the cup of cold coffee off the desk. “Can I get you another?” She asked. “Oh and please call me Niali.”

" Oh that would be great, kinda drowning in reports here" Sarah admitted sagely. " Computer add the following detail to Captain's patient file - 'Patient has missed her last two scheduled prenatal check ins, estimated gestation would be approximately 8-10 weeks. Last measurements and scans were on track however patient is currently off the ship for an unknown period of time.' Close file" She tossed the padd into another pile when a page from the bridge came through asking them to review some historical data.

" It never ends" Sarah lamented as she accepted a fresh steaming cup of coffee. "So Niali, I'm sorry I haven't had the opportunity to review your file. I'm sure you're a super doctor otherwise the Captain wouldn't have assigned you here"

Niali laughed, “I’m not sure about the adjective ‘super’ I would say I am diligent, efficient, up to date and I know my profession.”
She sat and crossed her legs. “So tell me about our Captain?”

Sarah laughed as she picked up the file " I'm assuming you mean the one that's currently not on the Sunfire? Although it's not beyond the realm of possibility that our current male Vulcan commander could be pregnant and not doing her prenatal check-ins" She downloaded the historical data that the bridge had sent through onto two pads as she talked, well used to multi-tasking. " Our illustrious Captain Kaylen...Bajoran, mid 50's, stubborn as a mule, refuses to acknowledge her age and insists on gallapanting around like a 20 year old. Terrible at keeping medical appointments, world's WORST in-patient... and currently MIA.. well not MIA... she's somewhere on Bajor for some unknown period of time" Sarah shrugged " Here's the stuff the bridge wanted analysed. Want a coffee?"

Niali jumped up, “no I’ll get one” she went to the replicator “Coffee black, extra hot, double sweet.” The steaming mug arrived and she took it blowing across the top. “I hate cold coffee and the minute you put it down it gets forgotten so I always hope it is still hot when I get back to it.” She sat down again crossed her legs and picked up the PaDD with the information the Bridge requested.

" So a quick catchup, we bumped into this planet a few hours ago, Ronson was able to retrieve their historical database, it mentioned a plague a long time ago and this seems to be the reason they're so damned afraid of everyone" Sarah gave the new CMO the short version of the current status. " They want us to see if there's any other relevant medical data"

Niali took the PaDD and started to look at the information contained within. “It looks like the plague began with a general infection, possibly some sort of bite from an insect, that might not have been indigenous to the planet. That is interesting as it would mean some outside intervention. They report fever, swelling, respiratory difficulties.” She skimmed further. “It is a little confusing but death seems to occur in 81% of those infected. Long term affects, on both men and women sterility.”

“You know Sarah this looks more like someone has planned this to take out the majority or all of the population. What do you think?” She took a large draft of her coffee, closed her eyes and smiled. “Wonderful” she said.

"From what I could discern from the data the bridge sent me, was that another species came, and the plague erupted from that. I have no idea if it was intentional or otherwise, but it would explain their paranoia." Sarah took a squig from her own coffee and wrinkles her nose. "Surely you can't consider replicated coffee anything other than rocket fuel"

Niali laughed, “I never had a problem with rocket fuel, keeps my day moving. I am afraid you will find I normally have a coffee in my hand, my mother told me I was born with an empty cup in my hand. "

"The Captain would give you a run for your money in that department, but if when she gets her ass back here there's gonna be the world's biggest coffee cup, and the world's biggest lecture about excessive caffeine intake whilst pregnant" Sarah grumbled as she turned back to the pad. "From what I can see no actual treatment was effective against this plague, it killed most of the inhabitants within a month"

Taking another large gulp of coffee she laughed. “I am looking forward to meeting this woman!” She continued looking at the PaDD trying to bring out the relevant information from the background of rubbish. “No mention of the infective agent dying out, it just seems to have stopped. I wish we had one of these..I am presuming insects due to the extent of the infection…to examine. I would love to get down to the planet to look around. Maybe it went into a phase of dormancy?” Niali stood and replicated another coffee.

"I don't see the likelihood of that happening" Sarah quipped as she looked through the files some more "looks like this is the first contact they've had with outsiders for a long time. They've blown everyone else up"

Niali snorted. “I wonder how we can change that, perhaps we should get someone medical to speak to them, offer them help in that way?”

"I'm assuming if the away team are successful in first contact we may be able to open a dialogue regarding medical treatments and precautions" Sarah rubbed her chin thoughtfully. " That'd be your ball to toss I guess " she smiled at the new CMO.

“Aren’t you glad about that too?” She said laughing. I think I will make a visit to the bridge to see what I’d going on what is the XO like?"

" Aren't I ever" Sarah snorted as she took another sip of the rapidly cooling coffee. How noone had invented a mug that kept coffee hot without it curdling yet was a miracle. "So the Captain's currently on leave, the XO, is currently on the away team, leaving Commander Kerr in charge on the bridge. The XO, Commander Savar is a good officer, Vulcan, married to the ship's counsellor, very.. ummmm.. Vulcan?" Sarah laughed. She was used to all sorts and all different species and they all had their unique mannerisms and intricacies.
