Command Recert - Savar Pt 1

Posted on Mon Jul 12th, 2021 @ 12:04am by Captain Rhenora Kaylen & Commander Savar cha'Salik hei-Surak Talek-sen-deen

Mission: Gamma Quadrant
Location: Ready Room

In her Ready Room Captain Kaylen had drafted a schedule that would allow the majority of the senior officers to recertify for command or bridge officer duty. One officer per day, allowing others time to practice as they saw necessary. Her own assessment was listed first, then she scheduled Savar in. Paging her XO to the ready room she thought it better to inform him in person due to the close proximity of the assessment.

Savar was on the bridge when Rhenora's page came. Acknowledging it, he stood. "Mr. House you have the bridge." He stated as he walked across the bridge and to the Captain's ready room where he pressed the chime to allow entrance.

"Come in" Rhenora called from within, rising to get herself a coffee in the process. The lack of sleep from the last busy few days starting to cloud her mind. It seemed things were going to be busy for the next few days. As her XO entered she grabbed her drink and rounded her desk, dropping into the high backed chair with a soft thud.

"Commander, thank you for coming" She started.

"It seemed the logical thing to do Captain as you did page me." Savar replied calmly as he remained standing all while looking at his captain and friend.

"Take a seat Savar" She gestured to the chair opposite the desk and took a sip of her coffee, relishing the bitter liquid as it worked on her mind and mood. Turning the monitor on her desk around she pulled up the message from Command regarding the recertification and the psychological evaluation. "It appears our next week is going to be...trying" She admitted.

He slid into the chair in his usual graceful manner and sat silently as Rhenora spoke of the next week being trying. "I am sure it is nothing this crew cannot handle Captain. What about next week will make it trying?"

"Starfleet Command has issued a requirement that all bridge officers recert the Command Scenario, and have a psychological evaluation" She replied with a sigh " As if we don't have enough to do at the moment" She felt frustrated at this latest requirement and dared to let it show.

"I see." Savar replied calmly seemingly untroubled by the news. "Why would Command wait until we have started our mission to issue this requirement? It is most illogical Captain. While it is irksome, it is nothing we should have any problem completing successfully or is there more I am unaware of?"

" I have a feeling this is a blanket fleet wide directive. Something must have happened somewhere to trigger this - or they've finally realised the war may have taken its toll on some of the fleet's finest." Rhenora admitted honestly " It's been a brutal few years to be honest"

Savar considered what Rhenora had said before replying. "Perhaps so Captain. I just find it odd that Command waited until this time to issue such a directive. None the less, I am sure we will comply with the directive. Have you given thought on how you wish to handle Command Scenario and the psychological examination?"

" The exercise and interview will be conducted on the holodeck, recorded, and submitted back to Command, along with a written recommendation from the ships Captain or XO" Rhenora explained.

"I see. You will write your recommendation for me and I you. Is that correct Captain? Who will administer the psychological exam?" Savar questioned his captain. "Also will be both take part in writing recommendations on the other bridge officers"

" I was going to split the load between Aurora and Remal, since I don't want to overload Aurora as she is still technically on maternity leave" The Captain paused to sip her coffee. " I can't say I'm looking forward to the whole matter"

Savar nodded. "That does make better use of our personnel." Savar admitted. "However do we not still have to sign off on the recommendations?"

Rhenora drew a breath "As Captain and XO we sign off on everyone elses, however the Admiralty will sign off directly on yourself and myself"

" I see." Savar replied but made no further comment. "When do you wish to begin these tests?" He inquired.

"Mine is tomorrow, yours the day after" She answered, pausing the rub the ridges of her nose. " To be honest I want to get mine over and done with, and to set an example for the rest of the senior staff"

"Are you alright Captain? Aurora mentioned running into the other night and having a nice chat...and drink or two with you." He teased as he finished up completely deadpan, watching for Rhenora's reaction.

" Trouble sleeping, Sarah has me taking some herbs that not only taste terrible but make it hard to sleep." She rubbed her eyes, making the mental note to get a nap in some time this afternoon. " No secret is safe anymore" She snorted in good nature.

"Captain, you should know Aurora would never divulge a private conversation even to me. I see my sense of humor still needs working on." He looked across the space between them. "Humor is so illogical."

" Well you weren't far off the mark" She smiled, wondering what Vulcan's discussed in their off hours if they didn't make small talk "Sadly there were no drinks, we did however share a vision from the Prophets regarding the freighter. We had a nice chat afterwards" She admitted.

"Aurora thinks very highly of you Captain as do I. I am glad you both had the opportunity to have nice talk. A vision, that is extraordinary."

"Slightly less confusing than the last few I've had" Rhenora admitted as she settled back down behind the desk, readdressing the matter at hand. " So, my evaluation is at 0900 hours tomorrow morning, I have a meeting with Remal after that for the psychological component. I'll schedule yours for 0900 the day after"

Very well Captain. I mean offense by my next question but should Remal be conducting your psychological exam as he is your husband." Savar asked.

" As Aurora is on maternity leave I didn't want to over burden her. and with yourself as XO means Remal is our only full time counsellor. Would you like to oversee to the evaluation to ensure that it is above board?" She raised an eyebrow at him.

"You wound me Captain. I was not speaking for myself but in regards to those in Command who will receive the exam results. I wish not to give them any sense of impropriety." Savar replied calmly. "However you can do as you wish and tell them to go to hell."

Rhenora chuckled at little at the comment and had expected no less from her XO. His job was to pull her into line when she crossed it.
" As much as I would like to..." She left the words hanging in the air like a loaded weapon she could never truly unleash. " You're right, there should be an impartial observer. You may chose whether it be yourself or Aurora"

"i believe it would be in the best interest of everyone if Aurora conducts the psychological exam. I have no objection to your husband sitting in as an observer to the exam." Savar replied placidly.

Rhenora nodded, before turning her attention back to Saver's assessment "Do you have any questions before the evaluations begin?"

"No Captain, I do not other than to invoke a human custom and that is to wish you good luck."

" Thank you Savar, it's appreciated. Please report to the Holobeck at 0900 hours tomorrow morning to oversee the practical component of my assessment, I'm sure I'll see you shortly after" She forced the confident smile that wasn't echoed from within.

Savar nodded, "I shall see you tomorrow morning Captain. Do get a good night sleep." Savar replied as he stood and moved to exit the ready room.
