550 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Character Development
Location: USS Sunfire - Quarters

Bonnie woke to the uncomfortable realization that she was still wearing yesterday's clothes. For several seconds she remained perfectly still, staring at the ceiling of her quarters while the events of the previous day assembled themselves into something resembling memory.

The battle in the Badlands. The explosion that rocked the ship and almost ejected her out into the vastness of space itself. The Bristol and her sickbay filled with injured bodies. The computer core and the hours spent crawling through damaged systems and coaxing power back into a ship that seemed personally offended by the concept of remaining functional.

She had eventually made it back to her quarters sometime after the Core had finally stabilized, intending to sleep for a few hours before Engineering needed her again. Her body had interpreted that as an invitation to become unconscious wherever she happened to be standing.

Pushing herself upright, she immediately discovered that her quarters looked worse than she remembered. The battle had shaken half her belongings from their usual places, leaving clothing, PADDs, tools, and assorted personal effects scattered across the room. Bonnie rubbed at her eyes and sighed. "Ugh..." She paused, looking around.

The shower seemed like the obvious place to begin restoring some dignity to the morning. She made it as far as the mirror before the universe decided it had been too generous with her yesterday.

She dragged a brush through her hair, caught a stubborn knot, and pulled harder. The brush stopped dead. Bonnie tugged again. Nothing. "Really?!" She worked at it patiently for several seconds before finally freeing the brush, along with enough hair to make her wonder if it might just be easier to shave it all off.

The incident should have been an omen. Bonnie, unfortunately, was tired enough to miss the most obvious of celestial warnings.

Getting dressed proved considerably more ambitious. One foot became temporarily entangled in her underwear, her balance disappeared, and she lurched forward with an undignified 'yelp' "Cac!". Her hands reached for something to stop the fall and found nothing. A moment later she landed face first against the shower enclosure with a hollow thump, followed by several seconds of stunned silence.

Bonnie slowly lifted her head. "Let's just agree that didn't happen." She said, to no-one inparticular. She eventually emerged from the shower with a tender nose, damp hair, and the sort of exhausted resignation usually reserved for dealing with malfunctioning warp cores. She dressed carefully, checked herself in the mirror, and decided that while she looked tired, she at least looked presentable. That seemed like victory enough for one morning.

Her combadge chirped. Bonnie tapped it absently. "Durnell."

The Engineering relay came through, followed by the updated repair schedule and the latest coordination messages from DS9. Bonnie listened while reaching for her PADD, then froze halfway through the motion. She checked the time.

Her eyes widened, "No." She checked it again, as though the chronometer might have the decency to apologize. She was already running an hour behind.

Bonnie stared at the ceiling for a long moment, then slowly gathered her PADD and equipment. The morning had apparently decided subtlety was overrated. "Fine," she muttered towards the universe in general, while heading for the door. "Let's see what else you've got in store for me today."
