533 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Beholder
Location: Baldric's Quarters

Alpha shift had come and gone with each of the Sunfire's senior crew elbows deep in their respective assignments before the mighty Starship arrived at Skygowan. Baldric had retired to her quarters but had been unable to switch off from the captivating logs of the old USS Enterprise. Before there was any A,B,C,D or even E. The Original Enterprise.

'Personal Log - Marie Batel.
This should be a Captain's Log... but I'm not a Captain of anything anymore. Hell, I shouldn't even be alive. It's been 3 months since the Cayuga went down, and the Enterprise crew are lovely, living with Chris is amazing - but I feel lost. I have no ship, even though Bob is sending me a list of available commands. Do I want to command again though? I'm still not cleared medically, and in my gut I feel something is brewing within, but I can't quite put my finger on it. I've had vivid dreams of something strange - I don't think it's Gorn, but I'm not sure it's not either. My treatments are going well, although if Starfleet ever find out I'll be thrown out along with Joseph, Chris and Una. The pain had been increaskng though, and they keep adjusting the medication to keep me comfortable. I haven't told Chris, I'm waiting until we're out of options. There's some more that Joseph thinks will work.'

Jennifer sucked a breath betwern her teeth, starting to understand the complexities of those involved. She poured herself a finger of gin and added some tonic water and lime and returned to the screen.

'Chief medical officers log - We have been able to obtain some chimera blossom from an unknown location and Spock is formulating a serum that we will use to treat Captain Batel. Her condition remains precarious, yet I am confident this will give her a fighting chance. Whilst i was off duty Spock performed a mind meld with some complications to help control hrr pain. The results of the meld I fear will only be temporary. Tomorrow we should have the serum ready, Marie has already given her consent should she regress before it is ready. This serum with merge the Gorn DNA with her existing genetic structure, supported by a secondary plasma source.'

The gin was gone, as was the plate of fruit she had replicated to go with it. The mystery deepened. So Batel was human, with both Ilyrian and Gorn genetic material, all fused together with chimera blossom. But how did thqt fit in with the Beholder?

"Anthropology officers log - S Kirk - Things have gone weird in a way only the Enterprise can offer. Dr M'Benga is missing on Skygowan, Nurse Gamble who we thought was dead is again alive and inhabited by a Vedza, and Captain Batel's lifesigns mirror those we took of the Beholder statue a few months ago. Spock presumes that cause and effort may be in some kind of flux, and Batel seems convinced that she is the Beholder even though the Beholder statue is already there. She and Captain Pike are beaming down shortly to Skygowan. I'm not confident of the outcome.'
